The Wildcat bowling teams went to their first OAA tournament Sunday Feb 13th. The results were mixed. The format was 2 regular team games and 6 baker games. The top 6 teams would move on to best 2 of three baker games. The 1 and 2 seeded teams would get byes in round 1.
The boys got off to a very slow start. They just never got anything going all day. The highlights were a nice 216 game in the forth baker game and Brandon Hulbert's 195 game. The guys ended up with a 2653 score and last in the tournament.
" It's tough watching the guys work so hard and not succeeding. They are setting themselves up for the future but its not real fun right now. We are trying to keep positive and we'll keep working hard, There's not quit in these guys."
The girls were just the opposite. They came out hot and got hotter as the day went on. The first game Heather Lafnear shot a 199 and the team was rolling with a average 763 game. In game 2 Lafnear shot 225 and Alyssa Hurtado had a 186 game. The team shot a nice 837 game. They were in good shape going into the 6 baker games. For the regular season the girls averages 150 for there baker games. Today they showed there progress averaging a strong 175. The girls would qualify 3rd behind Clarkston and Lake Orion.
In the championship round the girls would face Royal Oak the 4th seed. Royal Oak was a team the Oxford bowled tough in the regular season but lost. The girls would not lose today beating Royal Oak 162 to 144 and 189 to 173. In the next round the Lady Cats would face Lake Orion. Lake Orion finished second in the regular season with only 1 loss, to undefeated Clarkston. They also qualified 265 pins higher the Oxford in today's tournament. In game 1 LO flexed their muscle bowling a very strong 234 game defeating Oxford's 199. Oxford young girls would respond very impressively in game 2 winning 211 to Orion's 178. This would set up a third and deciding game 3. The game was very close early but the determined ladies from Oxford would pull away late winning 172 to 135. Oxford was in the finals against powerhouse Clarkston.
Oxford would loss to Clarkston in the Championship match 206 to 155 and 188 to 120 and finish 2nd in the OAA tournament. "It was a great effort by our lady bowlers and a really peak into next year. We feel like this team is only going to get better and better. I couldn't have been prouder of these ladies today. To bet 2 teams that beat us earlier in the year was awesome."
Congratulates to Heather Lafnear for earning First Team All Conference and Colleen Walters for 2nd Team.
Both teams are now prepping for regional events the last weekend of the month.
